R.J. Murphy Construction, Inc. - Your Huntington Beach General Contractor
R.J. Murphy Construction works out of an office on Warner Avenue in Huntington Beach, just over a mile from Huntington Harbour. This is our home market. Seven of the eight projects in our portfolio are in Huntington Harbour, and our family-owned company has been building and remodeling since 1989.
Much of Huntington Beach went up in one burst. The city counted 11,492 residents in the 1960 census and 115,960 in 1970, so a large share of its houses date from the 1960s and 1970s. Huntington Harbour itself was dredged out of the old Sunset Bay wetlands starting in 1963. Homes from that era often have good bones along with original windows, closed-off kitchens and floor plans that turn their back on the water.

Our Huntington Beach Construction Services
Salt air is the common thread. Within a few miles of the ocean and the harbor channels, hinges, fasteners, window frames and exterior paint wear out faster, so coastal-rated materials go into the plan from the first drawing. Here is the work we do in Huntington Beach, with a local project for each.
- Whole Home Remodels: Reworking harbor and tract homes around the view, the yard and modern systems. Our Davenport Modern Remodel turned a 4,300 square foot Huntington Harbour house into a four-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bath modern home.
- Custom Homes: Ground-up builds, including tear-downs where the original house is past saving. Seascape Modern is a 7,000 square foot, five-bedroom harbor home designed by Hannouche Architects and built by our team.
- Kitchen Remodels: Kitchens that open toward the patio or the dock. The Kingsdale Modern Kitchen Remodel paired a light coastal design by John McClain Designs with our build crew.
- Outdoor Living: With a mild, dry coastal climate, the backyard gets used most of the year. Our Spanish Casita Backyard Renovation added an outdoor kitchen with granite counters and Spanish-style detailing.
WHAT HUNTINGTON BEACH HOMES NEED
What Building in Huntington Beach Involves
City Permits and Coastal Review
Plan check and building permits go through the City of Huntington Beach. Lots inside the California Coastal Zone can also need a coastal development permit, so we confirm a property's status before the design is final.
Flood Zones Near the Harbor
Parts of the city, especially low-lying blocks near the harbor and wetlands, sit inside FEMA flood zones. There, a new home or a major remodel can bring elevation rules that change both design and budget, so we pull the flood map early.
Salt Air and Marine Layer
Damp mornings and salt spray are hard on metal and wood. We favor stainless or coated hardware, carefully flashed openings and exterior finishes made for the coast. It is less exciting than new countertops and matters more ten years out.
Neighborhoods We Work In
Huntington Harbour's five islands (Admiralty, Davenport, Gilbert, Humboldt and Trinidad), the blocks around downtown and Main Street, and Sunset Beach, now part of the city. Downtown is about 11 minutes from our office without traffic.
